Die Deutschen Bücher – The German Books
Thanks for stoping by! By buying books via my link to amazon.de you also give me a small percentage of the purchase, and that will go to cover the hosting and maintenance costs. Even better is to use the recommended book links. You are also welcome to visit the amazon.com, if you are not located in Germany, but in the USA or elsewhere. Here is the current selection of the books:
Amazon.de (Germany):
- Belarussisch: Wort für Wort – a small, but nice phrasebook from Kauderwelsch series devoted to Weissruthenisch;
- Belarus in Zentrum Europas – a very nice guide about Belarus, beautiful design, quite informative;
- Weissrussland entdecken. Natur und Kultur von Brest bis zum Dnepr.
– Should be a bad book, but I don't know why they said Dnepr, because Belarusian territories extend to the East beyond that great river.
- Weissrussland. Dirk Holtbrügge – I've read only several pages about the language and culture, and it left the impression that mister Holtbrügge has no clue, what he is writing about. Perhaps, the sections on politics and economy are better. The "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" wrote a rather positive review about this book.
- Deutsch-Englisch Wörterbuch – I've tried 3-4 different German dictionaries. So far I think this one from Langenscheidt is the best.
- MAXI Deutsch-Englisch / Englisch-Deutsch Wörterbuch – it appears to be the #1 selling dictionary on the whole amazon.de right now. For my personal needs, it's too big and expensive, but if you can afford it, I think it's a great buy.
- Wörterbuch Englisch-Deutsch, Deutsch-Englisch – it's cheap, and it seems to be oriented more towards Germans learning English, but it's possible to use it the other way, of course.
- German Grammar – by William Rowlinson. Small, but comprehensive grammar guide, real examples from newspapers and everydey speech.
- Wicked German – by Howard Tomb. Small and hillarious. Perhaps, not so much to learn, but to have fun and get a feeling for the German language.
- Scheisse!: The Real German You Were Never Taught in School – by Gertrude Besserwisser. Just 126 pages, but it's hillarious. Not for snobs though! Perhaps, there is even less to learn than in "Wicked German," but it's definetely interesting to know all those words.
- Culture Shock! Germany – by Richard Lord. Haven't read this one yet, but planning to buy it. From the user comments: "Highly recommended for anyone planning an expatriate experience, or thinking about visiting Germany for longer than two weeks."
- – by John Ardagh. Should be similar to "Culture Shock! Germany" but much more details (more than 600 pages).
- German Way: Aspects of Behavior, Attitudes, and Customs in the German-Speaking World – by Hyde Flippo. In the user comments the readers say that "Culture Shock! Germany" is better, but some people are quite happy with it...
